Rare Books and Manuscripts

The Rare Book Collection, located in the Menzies Library, holds over 34,000 items. These items are listed in the catalogue and include a wide spectrum of disciplines and formats.

Identifying and accessing rare books

  • Rare books are identifiable in the Library catalogue by the location "Menzies Rare Book".
  • You may not borrow from the Rare Books Collection, but you may view items upon request.
  • Items in the ANU and ACTON Press archive are only available for consultation where the Library holds no other copy.

Requesting an item from the Rare Books Collection

  • Look it up in the catalogue and request it online -- or --
  • Complete a request card and submit it to the Menzies Information Desk. We collect the requested item at these times:
    Monday to Friday: 10.30 a.m, 2.30 p.m
    Sunday : 1.45 p.m
  • You must submit requests before the times listed above. Please allow 10-15 minutes for retrieval.
