University Library Australia

Borrowing

University Library Australia (ULA) is a national borrowing scheme run by the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) that allows staff and students from participating universities outside the ACT to borrow from the ANU Library for a fee. Eligible post-graduate students and staff at institutions within the ACT will still be able to register as members under the current ACTUAL scheme.

For information on current ULA charges, or to register as a ULA borrower, please enquire at the Loans Desk. To register, you will need to bring a photo ID and either proof of current enrolment or current employment/affiliation at your home institution. Memberships are valid for the academic year, ie from March 1 to February 28.

It is not possible for the Library to provide ULA borrowers with either electronic resources or Internet access.

ULA borrowers may borrow from all ANU libraries. They may borrow 15 items at the one time for a 4 week loan period (unless the item is recalled by another borrower within the 4 week period). Only items held in the University Library's general collection may be borrowed. This does not include serials, items held in the Reserve Collections, audiovisual materials, or teaching resource material held in the Art and Music Libraries.

Please note that loans cannot be processed without a card and that cards are not transferable. Lost cards should be reported immediately to any Loans Desk.

For more detailed information about borrowing, please consult the External Borrowers section of the Loan Schedule.

Reservations (Holds)

If a required item is out on loan, it is possible to place a reservation on it via the online Catalogue. Please consult Placing a Reservation (Hold) for more details.

Fines and Penalties

When a reservation has been placed on an item, the current borrower may be required to bring the item back earlier than the original due date. The borrower will be notified that the book now has a hold on it and will be told if the due date has changed. If recalled items are not returned by the due date, fines will accrue at the rate of $4.00 per day. It is advisable to ensure that mail is checked daily so that items recalled for other borrowers can be returned promptly on request. If you are going to be away then either return your items before you go or ask someone else to check your mail and return your items for you if required. This ensures that overdue penalties are not incurred and that other borrowers are not prevented from obtaining wanted material. Any item more than 4 weeks overdue will be deemed lost and replacement and processing fees will apply. Even if the item is returned at this point, an invoice fee will remain.

You also need to be aware that if you incur fines at the ANU Library then this information will be forwarded to your home institution library which may also impose penalties against you.

For more detailed information, please consult Library Fines/Penalties for Overdue/Lost Items.

Reserve Collection

ULA borrowers are not eligible to borrow from the Reserve Collections, ie items which are restricted to a 2 hour or 2 day loan period.

Inter-library Loans

ULA borrowers may obtain items held by other libraries within Australia and overseas via inter-library loan for a fee. For details of charges, see Document Supply Service.
