Fines, Charges and Penalties for Overdue or Lost Items

Any item borrowed from the Library must normally be returned by the date or time on the transaction receipt or the date due slip. However, if you receive a notice advising that the item has been recalled for another borrower and that a new due date has been set, then it must be returned by the new date. Failing to return any item by close of business on the due date may incur a penalty as set out below.

  • TWO HOUR/OVERNIGHT LOANS: Fines will accrue at the rate of $4.00 per item for first hour overdue or part thereof, and $6.00 per item per hour for each successive hour or part thereof.
  • TWO DAY LOANS: Fines will accrue at the rate of $4.00 per item per day.
  • ONE WEEK LOANS: Fines will accrue at the rate of $4.00 per item per day.
  • RECALLED ITEMS: Fines will accrue at the rate of $4.00 per item per day.
  • LOST BOOKS: Any item more than 4 weeks overdue will be deemed lost. Replacement costs or $110.00 (incl GST) will be charged. If you return the item at this point, a fee of $10.00 or any outstanding recalled item fines still apply.
  • OUTSTANDING CHARGES: When a total of $25.00 in fines and/or charges is outstanding, a borrower will automatically lose their borrowing privileges. This loss of borrowing privileges will remain in place until the outstanding amount is paid in full.
  • PAYMENT OF FINES: Fines are payable by credit card, EFTPOS and Moncard in the JB Chifley, RG Menzies, WK Hancock and Law Library or by EFTPOS and Credit card in the Music Library. The Library no longer accepts cash payments but these can be made in the Copland Building (Number 24), Room 37, Monday to Friday between 9.00am and 4.30pm.
