For External Users

Access to some ACT Libraries

The ANU Library has arranged access and, in some cases, borrowing arrangements with the following Canberra libraries. Users wishing to use any of the libraries named should contact the libraries directly. Access details are listed below.

Please note that inter-library loan charges apply.

Australian Catholic University, Signadou Campus

  1. Academic staff, Masters and Ph.D. students may have borrowing rights immediately upon identification:
    1. Ten items may be borrowed from the general collection for two weeks.
    2. Serials may not be borrowed.
    3. Items from Special Reserve may not be borrowed.
  2. ANU General staff and students not included in (1) above may use the library's collections, but are not given borrowing rights.

Australian Defence Force Academy

  1. ANU academic staff and postgraduate students may apply for external membership of the Academy Library. There will be no charge.
    1. External membership allows users to borrow general books but does not permit access to the Short Loan collection.
    2. Serials may not be borrowed.
  2. ANU undergraduate students may use the library on a reference basis.

Geoscience Australia

  1. Full-time teaching and research staff and Ph.D. students from the Research School of Earth Sciences and the Department of Geology, The Faculties, will be given the following privileges upon production of identification:
    1. Books may be borrowed for two weeks, with the exception of:
      • reference works,
      • books housed in Geoscience Australia Library's new book display area,
      • books on outpost loan to Geoscience Australia sections,
      • confidential material, rare books and theses.
    2. Serials may not be borrowed.
    3. Photocopying for these users will be provided free of charge.
  2. All other ANU staff members and students may use the Geoscience Australia Library as members of the general public. Photocopying will be charged to these users at the current rate.

Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies

ANU staff and students may use the Institute Library on a reference basis. Books are available on loan only through the inter-library loans system.

Australian Institute of Health and Welfare

Academic staff may borrow 3 items for 3 weeks. Serials and reference material are not for loan. Access to the building and the collections should be arranged through the Librarian (telephone 6244 1004).

CSIRO (ACT)

  1. Academic staff from ANU may apply to borrow books but not serials from CSIRO (ACT) collections in normal working hours after providing formal identification.
  2. Postgraduate students may use the libraries only if a letter of introduction from a Head of Department is provided, indicating the reasons for the need to use CSIRO collections. Postgraduate students must arrange an appointment with the appropriate CSIRO library before their first visit to discuss access arrangements.
  3. Undergraduate students from ANU are not permitted to use the collections.
  4. ANU academic staff may do a limited amount of photocoopying free of charge. Normal charges apply for a larger amounts of copying.

National Gallery of Australia Research Library

  1. ANU staff and students preparing honours, masters or Ph.D. theses may apply for reader status. This provides use of the catalogue and reference service. Borrowing is available only through the ANU Library's Inter-Library Loan service. Reader status is not normally available to ANU students for general undergraduate or diploma study.
  2. Applications for reader status should be made on the appropriate forms (available at the Loans Desk, J.B. Chifley Building) or on NGA web page at http://www.nga.gov.au under research.
  3. Students who qualify for reader status should consult the NGA Chief Librarian (telephone: 6240 6532; fax: 6273 2155) if they envisage that their chosen topic will require extensive use of NGA Research Library facilities.
  4. Individuals granted reader status are required to observe the conditions of use determined by the NGA Research Library.

University of Canberra

  1. All ANU staff and students may apply for courtesy membership of the University Library. There will be no charge.
  2. External membership allows users to borrow general books but does not allow borrowing of items in the Short Loan collection. The membership also allows access to reference assistance.
