Viewing Chinese characters:

The Chinese text should display automatically. If the characters do not display it could be because your browser is too old and does not support Unicode fonts. Alternatively, it could be that your browser has not picked up the instruction to display using UTF 8.

Make sure the text encoding in your browser is set to Unicode (UTF-8). Depending on your browser and your operating system, you should find this under VIEW and then either ENCODING or CHARACTER SET.
If you are having problems, we have found Internet Explorer to work well on both Mac and Windows. It can be downloaded free from Microsoft.

Viewing documents:

The documents in this database are in Portable Document Format (pdf). To view these documents, your computer needs to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed. Most computers will already have this installed. If you do not have it, you can download this free software from http://www.adobe.com/

To view a document,

click on the thumbnail image. The document will be displayed in Acrobat Reader within a new browser window. NOTE that some documents are larger than others, depending on the number of pages in the document. Larger documents will take longer to display.

Because some documents are larger than others, we suggest that you should view the metadata first to be sure that this is the document that you wish to download (or view).

To view the metadata

(information about the document) click on the line of text below the thumbnail image of the document you wish to consult. The full metadata for the document will be displayed in a new window. If the Chinese script is not legible, again set the encoding settings to UTF 8. When you are finished reading the metadata, close the browser window and you will see your most previous window behind.

You are also able to search for all other documents that use similar keywords by clicking on the linked keywords in the metadata page.

Saving documents to your hard disc:

There are two ways to save the pdf files to your hard disc for viewing off line (based on Internet Explorer).
  • When in 'search results' or 'browse'; 'right click' (Windows) or 'control click' (Macintosh) and choose 'save target as' (Windows) or 'Download Link to Disc' (Mac)
  • If the pdf file is open, click the icon of a floppy disc icon in the top left of your page and save.

Browse

Click on "Browse" to display all documents in the 'Chinese Digital Archive 1966-1976'
Click on the title text below the document for a description of the document. To view the document, return to the search window and either click the thumbnail picture and the document will open or save the document to your hard disc for off line viewing.
