1. APOLOGIES
Ms K. Collier
2. WELCOME
Vic Elliott welcomed the committee members to the first Library Advisory Committee meeting for the Creative Arts since the January 2004 transfer to the ANU Library and explained that CAPLAC is a once a year forum for ANU Library and Creative Arts Staff to discuss wider Library issues. Deborah Crisp asked about student representation. The Committee endorsed this. It was also pointed out that the Committee needed to include a representative from the Center for New Media Arts at the next meeting.
3. DIVISION OF INFORMATION UPDATE 2006
Vic Elliott reported on developments within the Library:
3.1 Integrated Library Management System
Anticipated enhancements to the Integrated Library Management System (ILMS) include an automated Interlibrary loan system in order to process loans more efficiently; MetaFind, a cross-database search facility making it possible to do cross database searching including ArtsbibModern and Design and Applied Arts; and an Electronic Resource Management System bringing together all aspects of management including licensing agreements for all electronic resources, of which we have more than 300.
3.2 Move to Colleges and Library Advisory Committees
Potential for enhanced College and LAC cooperation. Nigel Lendon asked Vic Elliott how CASS meshed with DOI in regard to research. Vic talked about the big picture influencing research at ANU such as the inquiry, tabled December 2005, into Creativity and the Innovation Economy. The enquiry was chaired by Prof. Iain McCalman in his capacity as an appointee to the Prime Minister's Science, Engineering and Innovation Council. Research is dominated by science, hitherto an unexplored area for CASS's consideration. This needs to be a future agenda item. Vic pointed out that Robin Stanton is supportive of the continuation
of LAC committees.
3.3 Recent appointments
Rick van Haeften has been appointed Director of CIS: Corporate Information Services. Vic Dr.Molinari has retired from his job as Director of Scholarly Technology Services. His job has been advertised. The new person will be the third director responsible for developing e-research and e-education services.
3.4 Closure of JCSMR and Physical Sciences Libraries
The Eccles Medical Sciences Branch Library and the Physical Sciences Library have been closed. Materials from the Physical Sciences Branch went to the Hancock Library.
3.5 ANU E Press Vic reported that there is a strong support for ANU E press. Hosted by the Division of Information at The Australian National University, ANU E Press was established in 2003 to explore and enable new modes of scholarly publishing. Taking advantage of new information and communication technologies to make available the intellectual output of the academic community of the ANU, the primary focus of ANU E Press is the production of electronic scholarly texts.
4. ACCESS AND COLLECTIONS BUDGET 2006
4.1 Creative Arts Access and Collections Budget
The budget for 2006 was presented and Ms Pikler explained that the amount was an increase on 2005.
4.2 Proposal for the purchase of expensive items
Proposals for the purchase of one off expensive items for the consideration of CAPLAC were tabled and accepted.
5. EXTENSION OF OPENING HOURS
The Art and Music libraries have extended their opening hours by opening 8.30 on week days and by being open 1-5 Saturday and Sunday.
6. COLLECTION SPACE AND OFF-CAMOUS STORE
Vic Elliott noted that the ANU Library has reviewed the shelf occupancy of all its buildings. Shelf occupancy in all library buildings is 85%-97%. A target of 75% shelf occupancy has been set in order for collections to grow and for OHS standards for aisle width and shelving height to be met. We also have to consider flexible learning spaces for the students. Over half the students now have laptops, and there is a need for additional power points to accommodate these laptops. Consequently, the Library is looking into leasing/purchasing the store at Hume presently leased by the National Library. At the moment DOI is negotiating the conditions of lease/purchase with the owner of the store. The store has 25 kilometres of shelving available.
7. OTHER BUSINESS
David Williams wanted the Art Library's digital project named.
The meeting closed at 11.20 am
