Forgotten Trades – Selected records of early Australian trade unions

A new exhibition by ANU Archives highlighting selected records of early Australian trade unions has been launched.

The theme of the exhibition is ‘Forgotten Trades’, and ANU Archives is showcasing material from some of our more niche collections of early Australian trades, including:

  • Operative stonemasons
  • Felt hatters
  • Journeymen
  • Wigmakers
  • Shearers
  • Transport workers and railwaymen
  • Printing and kindred industries
  • Undertakers and cemetery employees

The exhibition also includes trades that continue in the modern era including bakers, hairdressers, furnishers, confectioners, miners, and textile, clothing and footwear makers.

The exhibition includes photographs, historical documents and objects from a variety of trade unions.

Items are on display in the Menzies Library foyer and ANU Archives Reading Room through to January 2019.
