Stop and read a book for Australian Reading Hour

Take the time to read for an hour on Thursday 20 September
20 September 2018

Today the ANU Library is encouraging you to stop for an hour and read as part of Reading Hour.

Australian Reading Hour is a national campaign that encourages Australians to pick up a book and read for one hour – day or night – on Thursday, September 20. Read by yourself, read with a friend, read to your children!

Research shows that reading can have a significant positive impact on our lives:

  • In adults, reading has been shown to reduce stress by 68% more than listening to music, going for a walk, or having a cup of tea.
  • Reading a gripping novel causes positive biological changes in the brain that can last for days.
  • Readers of narrative fiction achieved significantly higher empathy than other groups.
  • Reading is closely linked to increasing our understanding of our own identities.
