Rare books, special collections & manuscripts

The Petr Herel collection of artist's books and limited editions portfolios contains works created in the Graphic Investigation Workshop (GIW) (1978-1998), initially instigated at Canberra School of Art by former director Udo Sellbach.

Petr Herel, appointed head of GIW in 1979, developed the workshop curriculum and lead the workshop throughout its 20 years of existence. The four main and interrelated components in the Workshop's curriculum were drawing; the printed image; papermaking, and typography. Drawing was seen as central to the investigative process and this focus provided an ideal situation for the development of the artist's books in the Workshop's practice.

All items in the Collection were donated to the Workshop by the staff and students of GIW, and in 1998 the archive of artist's books were transferred to the Library's Rare Books Collection housed in the Menzies Library.

The artist's books and limited editions portfolio collection website includes a history of the workshop; information on the artist's books, and a selection of images from works in the collection.
