ANU Archives exhibitions – Building Australia’s National University

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Australian National University (ANU) in 2021, the ANU Archives has curated a new exhibition"75 Years of the Australian National University: Building Australia’s National University”.

This exhibition was launched on Tuesday 16 March by University Librarian Roxanne Missingham, followed by a talk by ANU Archivist Sarah Lethbridge.

Sarah discussed important and interesting buildings from the history of the University, and highlights of the development of our campus.

There are a range of incredible photographs of University buildings from across the last 75 years. These images capture moments in our history – showing students and academics interacting with buildings and spaces on campus.

A section of the exhibition is devoted to information about Fred Ward, the first head of the ANU design unit who oversaw campus planning; furniture; and interior design. Once you have seen the beautiful Fred Ward designs and drawings we have on display, you will realise you’ve seen his work all around campus (and maybe even sat in one of his iconic chairs!)

The exhibition also features a range of maps and plans of the University and surrounds. It is fascinating to see how our campus has changed and developed over the past 75 years, in particular where building locations and uses have shifted over time.

The exhibition is on display until June, and it is located in the R.G. Menzies Library foyer and Archives reading room.
