Introduction to ArcGIS Pro (GIS400)

Learn to make simple maps with ArcGIS Pro software.

What: This course comprises 6 x 2.5-hour self-paced modules that teach core concepts and skills for map creation. In this course, you will learn core geographic information system (GIS) mapping skills, including how to create simple, static (non-interactive) maps for books and journal articles.

The course includes a series of online lectures, quizzes, readings and practical labs, which focus on producing maps in Esri's ArcGIS Pro software.

When: This course can be completed at your own pace.

Software requirements: ArcGIS Pro.

Please email the CartoGIS Services team to request enrolment in this course.

Introduction to GIS Analysis for Research (GIS401)

Introduction to core spatial skills for research.

What: This course comprises 4 x 3-hour modules that introduce a range of core analytic and spatial skills for a variety of research applications. On completion of this course, you will be able to assess proximity; count the number of features in an area; summarise and map census data; and use network analysis to calculate distances along roads

When:This course can be started and completed at your own pace

Lab support sessions are available upon request

Course requirements:
Completion of all four modules are required to complete this course.

Prerequisites: Introduction to ArcGIS Pro (GIS400) or prior GIS experience.
Software requirements: ArcGIS Pro.

Please email the CartoGIS Services team to request enrolment in this course.

Introduction to Story Maps (GIS103)

Learn to use Story Maps, an easy-to-use story telling tool which allows you to weave a compelling narrative and share it with your audience. This training does not require knowledge or use of GIS software.

What: Over 4 modules, you will use well-designed layouts to develop a Story Map based on your own research. You will explore the potential of Story Maps for research communication, design and assemble your story; use Express Maps to provide spatial context for your research; and learn to promote your Story Map once it is created. This will give you an effective and visually appealing way to communicate your research impact to governments, funding agencies, and the public.

When: This course can be started and completed at your own pace

Prerequisites: Note

Software requirements: Personal laptop with web browser

Please email the CartoGIS Services team to request enrolment in this course.

Web Mapping in ArcGIS Online (GIS104)

Learn to use ArcGIS Online to create and share simple, interactive maps.

What: Web mapping in ArcGIS Online is a 2-part course which complements, but does not require, training in ArcGIS Story Maps. In these sessions you will be introduced to the fundamentals of web-mapping in ArcGIS Online and learn to generate well-designed web-maps that you can embed into your Story Maps, link to a blog, and share through social media! You will explore how to make pop-ups and control interactivity with existing templates, learning to generate maps which effectively reveal patterns and tell your research story.

When: This course can be started and completed at your own pace

Prerequisites: An understanding of creating and managing spatial data is useful.

Software requirements: Personal laptop with web browser.

Please email the CartoGIS Services team to request enrolment in this course.

Georeferencing and Digitisation (GIS201)

Learn to locate maps and images within a GIS environment and create new feature datasets’

What: This course comprises 3 x 4-hour self-paced modules that introduce methods of georeferencing and how to digitise historic maps within the ArcGIS Pro software. During this course, you will assign a spatial reference to a scanned historic map, digitise key information as feature classes, and refine features for further analysis.

When: This course can be started and completed at your own pace.

Prerequisites: Introduction to ArcGIS Pro (GIS400) or prior GIS experience.

Software requirements: ArcGIS Pro.
