2010s: Digitisation
2010s: Digitisation
How times have changed from those early beginnings!
Information is viral and mobile; engagement in the digital world through technology such as mash-ups, iPads, 3D television, and social media is increasing exponentially. Students are using their mobile devices to simultaneously listen to Gotye or The Black Keys, message their Facebook friends, locate an item call number in the ANU Library catalogue, and skim-read tutorial articles via Wattle, all the while debating Foucault or Mozi over a latté. Access to, and usage of, smartphone applications with such fluidity was a concept only dreamed of fifty years ago.
In a recent interview, the University Librarian, Roxanne Missingham stated "the ANU Library has had a wonderful history of being an innovator, and the future offers different challenges for us to be innovative."1 With growing digital theses and special collections, ANU E-Press moving up in the publishing world, streaming video from Kanopy, E-books, social media technology, AV/IT equipped group study rooms and more, the ANU Library continues to forge ahead into the technological future.
